Feed Your Family for Less with Frugal Recipes

There are many frugal recipes that you can use or even develop on your own to feed your family without breaking the bank. One misconception about frugal eating is that the food is of inferior quality. This certainly doesn't have to be the case, as there are recipes fit for a gourmet that are quite inexpensive to make. The key is discovering your family's favorite recipes and learning to make them for less. There is no point in coming up with a money saving menu if no one is going to eat what you cook. Once you know what your family likes and doesn't like when it comes to meals you can make changes to save money while providing delicious and nutritious food.


Suppose you have a favorite pasta recipe that your family loves. You could cut costs by switching to generic brand ingredients or shopping for recipe staples when the stores are having sales. When it comes to produce, buy fruits and vegetables that are in season or stock up on canned goods. If you are concerned that canned goods lose some of their nutritional value, don't be. Most canned fruits and vegetables are at least as nutritious as fresh produce if not more so. And, they can be less expensive.

You may find that quality meat is expensive at the supermarket. Consider adopting a plant based diet to save money and help your health. There are inexpensive and healthy protein sources like eggs, peanut butter and beans that are cheap and easy to use in your favorite recipes. This doesn't mean you have to become a vegetarian, however you may find that by eliminating some of the meat in your diet and relying on other protein sources for some of your meals you can reduce grocery costs and perhaps even your waistline.

Some frugality experts recommend buying and cooking in bulk. This is one frugal recipes strategy to consider if you love to cook, don't mind doing a week's worth of cooking in a day or two and have plenty of storage containers. By buying bulk whole food ingredients and cooking enough meals for the week then freezing them, you can save money using the simple concept of buying in larger quantities. Also you will save yourself work on those weekday evenings at dinnertime because all you'll need to do is reheat.
