How to Save Money for Kids: A Brief Guide
If you are a parent seeking to teach your child the ins and outs of proper money management the first place to start is how to save money for kids. Saving money is essential when it comes to having control of one's finances. Your child should be taught the value of saving from a young age so they will grow up understanding the value of doing so. Banks and credit unions can help you set up an account for your child, which you will of course have to sign for. Taking your child to the bank every week to make a deposit into their account can be a valuable life lesson.
While your child may want to spend the money they are depositing on a new toy or something else they want, showing them the value of saving instead is priceless. Explain to your child how compound interest works, and how the more they put in their savings account the more the bank will 'pay them.' Once your child understands the rewards of saving money in this manner they will be more likely to enjoy depositing money into their savings account rather than spending it on some unnecessary novelty. On the same note, kids should be provided some 'fun money' they can spend how they want within reason.
Another way to teach your child how to save is by getting them a piggy bank. While there are some adorable banks that are actually in the shape of a pig, this can also be a coffee can or milk jug. You can even make a bank using a coffee can, paste and construction paper to decorate the outside. This is a fun project to do with your child, something they can take pride in. Once the coin bank is full, count the money with your child and ask them what they want to do with it. They can of course cash it in, or put it in their savings account.
Parents may also want to know how to save money for kids future expenses like college or that first car. One tip is to start early. Establish an account for that purpose and make deposits regularly. If you begin when your child is in elementary school you will have a good chunk of money accumulated by the time they are off to the university or being handed their first set of car keys. As your child becomes a teenager of working age, encourage him or her to find employment on a part-time basis to help them pay for their own clothing, gas and entertainment expenses. The value of working for one's own money instead of expecting handouts is a lesson that children can benefit from for a lifetime.
